CBD For Migraine Sufferers

If you’re a long-term sufferer of migraines, you’ve most likely tried a variety of treatments and approach

es in an attempt to ease your symptoms or reduce the frequency of them.

Migraines are notorious for striking at any given moment, coming on suddenly and for many, with no direct cause or reason. Although some people know their trigger – chocolate, cheese, caffeine or stress, for example – a large percentage of sufferers can spend years trying to work out what brings on their severe headache and nausea, with no success.

As CBD accelerates its way into the health sphere for conditions such as epilepsy, stress, autoimmune disorders and general chronic pain, it’s prompting migraine sufferers to explore its potential effects – with success stories emerging daily.

To date, CBD hasn’t specifically been studied in isolation for migraines, despite the overwhelming anecdotal reports from people who use it. What we can hypothesise, from recent scientific research, is that migraines symptoms may be due to an endocannabinoid deficiency in the body and an abnormal inflammatory response.

Remember, the endocannabinoid system (ECS) in our body plays a huge role in maintaining cellular homeostasis (balance). Considering that sufferers often report that their migraines begin in response to a trigger, such as a certain food, drink or smell, this is triggering an imbalance in the brain. This should then trigger the production of endocannabinoids to maintain homeostasis – but if someone is deficient in endocannabinoids, a balance won’t be achieved and a migraine will develop. This is where CBD can come into play – phytocannabinoids interact with receptors, including the cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2, to help achieve homeostasis.

Despite the lack of research in migraines alone, many studies have linked CBD oil with pain relieving properties and documented its safety. This is prompting migraine sufferers across the globe to try CBD oil for relief. While large-scale scientific studies are what we should all be turning to for a solid evidence-base, anecdotal reports of success shouldn’t be dismissed. Many people are claiming that using CBD oil is helping ease migraine pain, shorten attacks and generally improve their quality of life.

Another reason why people may be favouring CBD oil to treat their migraines is the natural aspect. There are many over-the-counter medicines that can help ease migraine symptoms. But lots of individuals don’t want to take conventional drugs that come with potentially harmful side effects. Maybe you’ve tried acupuncture or homeopathy in the past in an attempt to help, but with no prevail? CBD has a solid safety profile to date and offers a natural alternative to manufactured drugs. With so many personal stories documenting its success, and its track record of safety and non-addictive nature, CBD oil is certainly something to explore if you’re searching for migraine relief.

Scientists and doctors seem to be onboard with the positive impact CBD could have on migraine sufferers, with many supporting its use and continued investigation in a clinical setting.

Dr Bradley Katz, a neuro-ophthalmologist at the University of Utah’s Moran Eye Center, quoted: “As we understand more about migraine, its triggers, and underlying causes, I think the outlook for natural treatments is very positive. Cannabis oil for migraine could turn out to be one of those treatments that can help people get relief without relying so heavily on traditional painkillers.”
